9. (a) Draw a labeled diagram of the apparatus used to separate a mixture of oil and water. Write name of this apparatus. (b) State any two other applications of the technique used in this apparatus.
A separating funnel is used to separate the mixture of oil and water.
This separation is based on the differences in the densities of the liquids. The liquid having more density (water) forms the lower layer (because it is heavier than oil) and the liquid having less density forms the upper layer (oil).
To separate mixture between two immiscible solvent phases of different densities.
- To separate a mixture of oil and water.
- To separate a mixture of kerosene oil and water.
