Divide each percent by that element's atomic weight. To get the answers to whole numbers, divide through by the smallest one.
 
C = 26.6/12 = 2.22                                 2.22/2.2 = 1
 
H = 2.2/1 = 2.2                             2.2/2.2 = 1
 
O = 100-(26.6+2.2)= 71.2/ 16 = 4.45     4.45/2.2 = 2.02
 
So, empirical formula is CHO2
 
Vapor density = 45
Molecular weight = 2 x vapor density
MW = 2 x 45 = 90
 
empirical formula is CHO2
weight = 12 + 1+ 32 = 45
since, molecular weight is 90, n= 2
So, molecular formula is C2H2O4
