4. Give reasons: [3M] (i) The oxidising power of elements increases on moving from left to right along a period in the periodic table. (ii) Ionisation potential of the element increases across a period. (iii) Alkali metals are good reducing agents.

1) The elements at the right side of PT have a greater tendency to gain electron thereby acquiring -ve charge, so they have a strong tendenct to oxidise others itself getting reduced, so moving from left to right tendency of gaining electron increases and so the oxidising power also increases.
 
2) Due to addition of 1 additional electrons in same shell (within same period) the total sum of energy required for removing those electrons also increases and this energy is ionization energy.
 
3) Alkali metals are most electrpositive metals of the periodic table that have a strong tendency of loosing electron and so reduces others nad itself gets oxidized so they are good reducing agents.
