Figure shows the calculation method of required banking of tracks.
Normal reaction force N is resolved into vertical component that opposes the weight
and horizontal componenet that gives the centripetal force.
Let m is mass of rail compartment, v is speed of rail and R is radius of curvature of track.
Hence, N sinθ = mv2 /R ...................(1)
N cosθ = mg ..................................(2)
dividing (1) by (2), we get tanθ = v2 /(Rg) = (20×20)/(400×10) = 1/10
If track width is 1 m and one of the track has to be raised by h m, then tanθ = h/1 = 1/10
hence h = 0.1m = 10 cm
