this is actualy elimination method and we add or subtract in order to remove one variable and then find the value of the other. we add if the variable we r going to remove positive in one equation and negative in another and we subtract if that variable is positive in both or negative in both like the equation mentioned here we are subtracting 2nd from the 1st equation as b is positive in both of them.
