2 pipes A and B fill a cistern in 24 minutes and 32 minutes respectively. Assuming that both pipes are opened simultaneously, when must the first tap be turned off so that the cistern may be filled in 16 minutes?

Since, it is asked to turn off the first tap so this means that the second tap is open till 16 minutes
The part of the cistern filled by Second tap i.e. Pipe B in 16 minutes = 16/32 =1/2 part
The remaining part to be filled is 1/2
Pipe A can fill a cistern in 24 minutes
1/2 of the cistern can be filled in 12 minutes by Pipe A
Thus, the first tap must be turned off after 12 minutes.
