The velocity of a body with respect to another moving body is called relative velocity.

If two bodies (1) and (2) are moving in the same direction with constant velocities v1 and v2 ,

the relative velocity of (1) with respect to (2) is v12=v1- v2.

The relative velocity of (2) with respect to (1) is v2 - v1.

If v2 moves opposite to v1,

then relative velocity of (1) with respect to (2) is v1 - (-v2) = v2 + v1.

i.e. v12=v1 +v2
