1. Helen Keller loved to be in the company of children. If there were children her, she would frolic with them. For her, even the smallest child was excellent company. In fact, she was glad that children usually liked her. The children she interacted with led her about and showed her the things they were interested in. Although the little ones were unable to spell on their fingers, she managed to read their lips. Sometimes I she would make a mistake and do the wrong thing, and this would cause the children to burst into laughter. Helen would often tell them stories or teach them a game.
2. When Helen was 19 months old, she contracted an unknown illness. The doctors described it as "an acute congestion of the stomach and the brain", which might have been scarlet fever or meningitis. The illness left her both deaf and blind.
