ICSE Class 10 Answered

1)why it is easier to turn the steering wheel of a larger diameter than that of a smaller diameter? 2)a body is acted upon by two forces each of magnitude F,but in opposite directions.State the effect of force if : a)both the forces act at the same point if the body, b)two forces act at two different points of the body at a separation r. 3)State any one way to reduce the moment of a given force abt the axis of rotation.

(1) when we turn a steering wheel, we apply a couple to rotate the steering wheel.
Couple is a pair of forces eual in magnitude but each force is acting at different point in mutually opposite directions.
Moment of couple is the product of magnitude of force and their separation distance.

When the steering wheel is bigger,  the moment of couple gets greater because distance between the force is greater.

(2) if both force act on same point, their resultant is zero because both are exactly in opposite direction.
If both forces are acting at different point, then this pair of forces is a couple. The action of couple is to give rotational motion.

(3) Moment of force is r × F  (cross product of vectors), where F is the force and r is the perpendiculr distance from
reference point to the point of application of force. Magnitude of moment of force |r| |F| sinθ ,
where θ is the angle between force and distance vector.  Hence moment of force can be decreased by decreasing the magnitude of force,
by decreasing the distance and by decreasing the angle between the force and distance
