(a)   Life processes: The basic functions performed by organisms to maintain their life on the Earth are called life processes.

(b)   Respiration: Respiration is a catabolic process of releasing energy from the simple sugar glucose for carrying out various life processes.

(c)    Nutrition: The process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth is called nutrition.

(d)   Photosynthesis: Photosynthesis is a physiological process by which plant cells containing chlorophyll produce food in the form of carbohydrates by using carbon dioxide, water and light energy. Oxygen is released as a by-product.

(e)   Heterotrophic nutrition: The mode of nutrition in which organisms cannot synthesise their own food, but they are dependent on other organisms for food is called heterotrophic nutrition.

(f)     Parasitic nutrition: The mode of nutrition in which the organisms obtain their food from the body of other living organisms is called parasitic nutrition.

(g)   Symbiotic nutrition: The mode of nutrition in which organisms live in association with other plants or animals and share their resources and get benefitted is called symbiotic nutrition.

(h)   Holozoic nutrition: The mode of nutrition in which organisms feed on solid food. The food is complex organic material which when ingested is broken down into simple inorganic substances by the process of digestion is called holozoic nutrition.
