1. The three men decide to go on a two-week boating holiday on the Thames from Kingston upon Thames to Oxford and back to Thames. 

 

As simple as their plan appears to be, the men come across many obstacles during their journey. For instance, when they decide to make scrambled eggs for breakfast, Harris claims to know how to make them but it turns out to be a fiasco. In another instance, the friends want to open a tin of pineapple juice but none of them succeed in doing so and they have to throw the tin into the river. These are a few instances that explain why things are not always as simple as they appear to be with reference to the novel Three Men in a Boat.

 

2. The author says, "You can never rouse Harris. There is no poetry about Harris- no wild yearning for the unattainable. Harris never "weeps, he knows not why." If Harris's eyes fill with tears, you can bet it is because Harris has been eating raw onions, or has put too much Worcester over his chop."

 

Harris is practical and unemotional by nature. The author feels that he does not appreciate romanticism and was never some who would understand poetry. However, there is a sense of humour in the properness and lack of emotions that Harris shows.
