'Talaash' Movie Review : Talaash is an engaging thriller

'Talaash' is a murder mystery that takes the well-trodden path of establishing links and connections that eventually help solve the jigsaw puzzle the plot throws up. However, as familiar as it may sound, Reema Kagti's film sets itself apart because of the powerful screenplay and strong performances by the lead cast. If only the pace at which it started, would have continued throughout its screen time, 'Talaash' would have been perfect.

What's it about?
As Inspector Surjan S Shekhawat, Aamir Khan plays a no-nonsense cop who is given charge of a high-profile accident case involving film star, Armaan Kapoor. Investigations lead Shekhawat to dead end after dead end and soon, everyone from a call girl (Kareena Kapoor) to a pimp get involved. You will find yourself doubting every character, as the plot takes you along in the investigation to find the killer.

Aamir plays both, the tough cop and the grief-stricken father, with great credibility. The ease with which he gets into the skin of his character is commendable, and he makes the other two Khans of the triumvirate look like mere stars, while he alone stands tall as the accomplished actor.

Rani Mukerji perfectly plays the part of Roshni Shekhawat, Aamir's wife in the film. She matches Aamir step for step when it comes to delivering an absolutely brilliant performance. The expression in her eyes alone expresses her deep pining for her dead son and the emptiness it creates in her life. Also her de-glam avatar gives her performance more weight.

Kareena Kapoor (yes, she hasn't changed her name onscreen post marriage!) is charming as the call girl once again (she played the role of a prostitute in 'Chameli'). Her character lends mystery to the plot and it'd be unfair to say any more than that. Nawazuddin Siddiqui also does justice to his vital role in the film.

Starting off at a running pace, 'Talaash' doesn't allow audiences much time to sit back, relax and take in the proceedings. While the first thirty minutes of the film are captivating and are sure to hold the audience's interest, the same cannot be said for the rest of the film. The film breaks for interval with an edge-of-the-seat twist but you'll be disappointed to see the pace slow down considerably when it resumes. A few scenes between Rani and Aamir in particular, seem a tad stretched. Fans of detective dramas may be able to put it all together, but for the rest, the nail-biting climax will come as a surprise and keep them busy guessing right till the very end.

What to do?
Reema Kagti's 'Talaash' instantly pulls you in and is an engaging whodunnit. With bookings having already started at your nearby theatres, you may have to launch your own talaash to find tickets. But do go watch it.
