As a Science student, your career options do not end at engineering. Think beyond engineering to explore fulfilling career opportunities in Defence, Management, Architecture, Air Force and Merchant Navy. Let’s explore these non-engineering career options for PCM students in detail.


1. Architecture Careers

If you enjoy Maths and Science and can think creatively, a career in architecture can be for you. Architects create design plans for private and public spaces. With a degree in architecture, you can become a landscape architect, industrial architect, spatial designer or architectural technologist. You can prepare for architecture entrance tests with sample question papers that are easily available online.

3. Merchant Navy Careers

If you constantly dream about adventures in the sea and navigating the earth by ship, pursuing a Merchant Navy course to join a shipping company may interest you. You would start out as a trainee, and as your experience increases, you can progress from officer grade levels and even become the Ship’s Captain. With a Science background, you can explore several training opportunities to embark on a sea-faring career which would include journeys on a passenger, cargo, cruise or container ship.


After Class 12, you can choose a BE in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering for careers in the merchant navy. To join the ship crew without an engineering degree, you need to complete relevant training programmes at top maritime institutes after Class 12.

4. Defence Careers

If you want to join the army as an officer, you can appear for the NDA and NA Examination held by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Defence careers may not be easy, but there is a sense of unspoken pride which comes from wearing the military uniform.

You don’t necessarily have to fight wars for a successful career in defence. Some of the defence career opportunities you can also explore are Army Linguist, Army Nurse, Army Automotive Maintenance Warrant Officer etc.

5. Aviation Careers

If you are enthusiastic about flying, then explore the pilot training courses. Training from reputed flying schools can help you to get a pilot’s licence for flying passenger aeroplanes or chartered flights and helicopters for private companies.

A management graduate can climb the corporate ladder as a Sales Manager, HR Manager, Marketing Manager, Finance Manager or Business Manager.
