Maharashtra: English and Maths to become optional in Class 10?

A majority of students appearing for the SSC board exams, who have been failing in English and Maths, have prompted State Education Minister Vinod Tawde to consider making the two subjects as ‘optional’.

More than 11 lakh students have failed in Maths and around 7 lakh in English over the past five years. Most of the students are from Marathi, Hindi and Urdu medium schools.

This alarming rate of failures among so many students prompted Vinod Tawde to declare that he aims “to make life easier” for Class 10 students.

In the statement, Tawde revealed that he has come to this conclusion after speaking to dozens of students who find these two subjects extremely difficult. The final decision on this matter will be taken soon. The suggestions and views of education experts have been invited.
