JEE Main 12th April 2023 (Shift 1 & 2) Question Paper Analysis

Day 5 of JEE Main 2023 Session 2 took place today, on the 12th of April 2023. Thousands of aspirants of BE/BTech undertook the exam. According to the NTA guidelines, the first shift commenced at 9:00 am and concluded at 12:00 pm. The second shift ensued from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

The entire question paper comprises 90 questions for both shifts. According to the marking scheme, each correct answer is awarded 4 marks, while 1 mark is deducted for every wrong answer. No marks are deducted for unanswered questions.

The official JEE Main 2023 Session 2 Answer Key will be released after the exam ends.

1st Shift, 12th April 2023: Major Highlights

JEE candidates who appeared for the 12th April Shift 1 exam summarised the question paper as follows:

  • Overall, the paper was moderately difficult.
  • All questions in Chemistry were direct and NCERT-based.
  • The physics section was well-balanced and the easiest of the three.
  • Math was lengthy, but the difficulty level was similar to the previous session.

Key points

Questions were asked from all chapters. There was a focus on Coordinate Geometry and Calculus.

The paper consisted of mixed concepts questions from Circles, Ellipse, and Hyperbola.

The calculations in the Numerical Section were lengthy. A few questions were labeled as difficult.

The paper focused on the following topics:

Inorganic Chemistry received more weight than Physical and Organic Chemistry.

Organic Chemistry was reported to be difficult.

The majority of the numerical questions came from Physical Chemistry.

Organic Chemistry had mixed-concept questions involving Aldehydes & Ketones, Amines,  Biomolecules, and Polymers.

These topics enjoyed more weightage:

The numerical questions were simple.

The section was mostly formula-based.

Equal weightage was given to all topics.

Overall: All three sections had questions from most chapters. The physics section was well-balanced. NCERT syllabus was mostly followed.

2nd shift, 12th April 2023: Major Highlights

  • The paper was moderately difficult.
  • The paper contained several NCERT-based questions.
  • Students reported the exam was lengthy.
  • The easier Physics and Chemistry sections compensated for the challenging Maths section.

Overall: The paper was much lengthier. NCERT was in focus for all three.
