ICSE students to get Unique ID numbers

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CICSE) has introduced a Unique ID (UID) number system for students in Classes 10 and 12. It decided to come up with UID numbers to prevent hacking and other similar issues. Last year, the issue of handling wrong question papers had created much confusion, which triggered the decision of implementing UID.

UID aims at speeding the process of evaluation and ensuring confidentiality. It will consist of seven digits and will remain with the student for life. Processes such as issuing of duplicate mark sheets and changing of names will become easier with UID.

A source from CISCE said, "The numbers are in no particular order and are unique to the student. This means no one else will have access to a student's marks from the Council website. The examiner will not know the identity of the student or of the school."

The Council has also sent instructional videos to schools to avoid any discrepancies in implementing UID.

The source added, "We do not want a repeat of what happened the last time, when a wrong question paper was handed out to Class 12 students in Lucknow. We have circulated a CD to supervising examiners at the 2000-odd schools affiliated to the Council. The CD, complete with live visuals, explains how supervisors should collect question papers and deposit them in the principal's cupboard, how students need to fill in the forms and how to pack the answer scripts."
