It’s the harvest season which is celebrated with great galore. In a country like India which is known for its cultural diversity, harvest festivals indeed have a great significance. The time of harvesting is considered a celebration and is welcomed with enormous warmth.

As we know, India is an agricultural country, so it’s crucial to know about the harvest festivals celebrated in India. These harvest festivals are celebrated with different names in different parts of the country. Makar Sankranti in the North, Pongal in the South and Bihu in the East are among the famous harvest festivals of the country.

So, let’s look at these harvest festivals which are celebrated with flamboyance in our country.

Makar Sankranti
Makar Sankranti is a festival of beginnings. People worship the Sun God and it marks the arrival of spring. Til and jaggery are the important sweets of the festival. People distribute sweets to their friends and relatives. The distribution of sweets signifies that we’ve forgiven everybody and are set for a fresh start.

Lohri
Lohri is a popular festival in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The bonfire is the highlight of the festival. It’s believed that the Lohri night is the longest night of the year. Locals take great pride in performing traditional dances and songs. Lohri is all about festive atmosphere and is a fun-filled festival enjoyed by people in groups.

Pongal
The four-day Pongal festival is an important festival in Tamil Nadu. The festival signifies peace, prosperity and happiness. A special dish called Pongal is prepared on the occasion. It’s a special preparation made by boiling rice and milk. Pongal celebrations are a way to thank nature for bestowing happiness on human beings.

Bihu
The seven-day festival Bihu is a popular festival of Assam. Bihu songs and dance are one of the major attractions of the festival. Traditional cuisines are also made during the festival. Assamese celebrate Bihu with great enthusiasm.

Onam
Onam is celebrated in Kerala and has an ancient significance. The festival dates to King Mahabali’s reign in Kerala and is celebrated in his honour. Traditional dance is performed during this time. During Onam, Kerala’s festive look is worth witnessing.
