Diwali - The Festival of Lights

For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year.  It is commonly termed as the festival of lights and is celebrated with great enthusiasm.

Diwali celebrations have a message. The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, truth over falsehood and light over darkness. During Diwali, people light diyas all around the house and offer prayers to Goddess Laxmi.

Diwali is associated with many ancient stories. One being the story of Lord Rama. It is said that on this day, Rama, Sita and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya after defeating Raavan and conquered Lanka, after 14 years of exile. People of Ayodhya decorate the entire place with lamps and diyas to mark the victory of Lord Rama. It is said that since that day, Diwali has been celebrated. Although there are many other similar reasons for celebrating Diwali, this one is quite prominent.

Children play with crackers and other fireworks on the occasion of Diwali. However, keeping in mind noise and air pollution, it is good for one to use few crackers.
