CBSE Social Science Curriculum 2019 for Class 9 and 10

For academic year 2019–20, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a number of changes in the Social Science curriculum for Class 9 and 10.

Key Observations

  • As compared to last year, the number of 1 mark questions has increased, while the count of questions carrying 3 and 5 marks has reduced.
  • As compared to last year, the number of questions has increased in the paper.
  • The map marking section will carry 6 marks. Earlier, this section was of 5 marks.
  • Analysing and Evaluation’ and ‘Creation’ are new question types.
  • Major changes have been made in the design of the question paper and in the exam paper pattern.

 

 

 

Chapters not to be evaluated in the Class 10 board exams  

According to the new syllabus, few chapters in Geography, Civics and Economics are only for periodic tests and project work and will not be evaluated in the Social Science board exam.

Few chapters in History have been omitted for Class 9 and 10.

2. History and Sport: History and Sport: The Story of Cricket (omitted in 2017)

2. Clothing: A Social History (omitted in 2017)

 

Class 10

1. The Nationalist Movement in Indo-China

2. Work, Life and Leisure: Cities in the Contemporary World

3. Novels, Society and History

 

Changes in the CBSE Social Science board paper are expected to benefit students. This is because Objective type questions has been introduced by the board which has a weightage of 20 marks as compared to the previous pattern where VSA questions were of 7 marks. The count of short and long answer type questions has been reduced. This step has been taken by the Board to enable students to have enough time to provide analytical and creative responses while answering the questions in the paper.
