CBSE Class 10 Maths (Standard) Exam 2020 - Board Paper Analysis

The CBSE Class 10 Maths exam was conducted on 12th March 2020. There were two sets of question papers - Basic and Standard, and the students could write either one of them. In this blog we are going to review the Standard Math paper:

Question Paper Structure

  1. The question paper consists of 40 questions divided into four sections A, B, C, and D. Section A comprises of 20 questions of 1 mark each, Section B comprises of 6 questions of 2 marks each, Section C comprises of 8 questions of 3 marks each and Section D comprises of 6 questions of 4 marks each.
  2. There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in two questions of 1 mark each, two questions of 2 marks each, three questions of 3 marks each, and three questions of 4 marks each. However there were only two questions of 4 marks each which had internal options. You had to attempt only one of the alternatives in all such questions.

The chapter ‘Surface Areas and Volumes’ had the highest marks and number of questions asked, followed by ‘Triangles’, ‘Statistics’ and ‘Introduction to Trigonometry ’. ‘Quadratic Equations’ had the least weightage of marks in the paper followed by Polynomials and Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables.

In the optional question of number 31 (New Delhi Set 3), the value of x cannot be equal to -4 and -7. But in the question it is mentioned as -4 and 7. In this case the denominator in the second term of the problem should have been x-7. In this particular case, the students may get the benefit of doubt.

In conclusion, the questions in the C and D section where bit lengthy and time consuming, since they were long answer type questions. Now the 20 questions of section A were easy, with one or two question requiring some thinking but overall everyone is expected to score 20 out of 20 marks in this section.

According to class 10 students, nothing in the paper was asked beyond the CBSE Class 10 Maths Latest Syllabus. Students are expecting to score good marks in this paper.
