CBSE Class 10 Board Exams 2021 Cancelled, Class 12 Board Exams Postponed

Due to a nationwide Covid-19 surge, CBSE Class 10 board exams have been cancelled and CBSE Class 12 exams have been postponed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly said in a meeting that while academics are important, "the health and well-being of students has to be the top priority for the government". The India Wide Parents Association had pointed out in a letter to PM Modi that teachers and students have not been vaccinated yet and there was a higher chance of infection among them.

Following the announcement by CBSE, Gerry Arathoon, Secretary of the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), told that CISCE will also “review” the situation and take a decision on the ICSE and ISC exam dates “at the earliest”.

According to the revised date-sheet, The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exams for Class 10 and Class 12 were to be held from May 4 to June 14. A decision on the new dates will be taken on June 1 and the students will be given at least 15 days' notice before the exams.

CBSE Class 10 exams results would be prepared "on the basis of an objective criterion to be developed by the Board". Students of class 10 will be promoted on basis of internal assessment. Those not satisfied with the assessment can appear for the exam whenever they can be held, said Mr. Pokhriyal.

The Ministry officials said cancelling or conducting online exams for CBSE Class 12 students is not an option. “It’s not possible to conduct the exam online at short notice. How will students familiarize themselves with the online pattern so quickly?” an official said.

CBSE would consider having more objective-type questions in the exam to reduce the time spent in the examination hall. “The Board has already set the question papers. A decision on changing the paper pattern is a difficult one and will only be considered based on what the situation is a month later,” the official said.

Maharashtra Government has already postponed SSC, HSC Board Exams 2021 due to Covid-19. State Boards of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh have already postponed their board exams. Chhattisgarh has cancelled the Class 10 exam and postponed the Class 12 exam.

In 2020, Class 10 and Class 12 Board exams had to be stopped midway as educational institutions had to shut down due to increasing Covid cases. The remaining papers were postponed to July 2020, but were eventually cancelled and students were assessed based on a special marking scheme. CBSE Class 12 students who were not satisfied with their results were allowed to appear for their exams later in July but CBSE Class 10 students were not given that option.
