BITS Pilani Partners with edX to Offer Open Online Courses

Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS), Pilani, and edX, an open source learning platform, have come together to offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS), Pilani, and edX, an open source learning platform, have come together to offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). With the edX Edge platform, BITS Pilani will be offering about 60 courses to on and off campus students.

The popularity of MOOCs has grown massively over a short period of time, and India is the second largest market for edX. As of now, edX offers about 208 courses. BITS will provide the content for the courses, while edX will be a platform to implement the courses. BITS is thinking of calling their courses as SPOCs (Small Private Online Courses) instead of MOOCs.

With this partnership, BITS also becomes a contributing member to the edX list of contributing members such as MIT, Harvard University, IIT Bombay, University of California (Berkeley), Rice University, Caltech University and the Linux Foundation.
