Aspiring medical students in a soup as SC reorders NEET

On Monday, the Supreme Court (SC) dropped a bombshell on lakhs of students by declaring that the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET), a common entrance examination, has been revived. What has shocked aspiring medical students is that there is only a month left for separate entrance tests for admissions to government and private medical colleges.

A Constitutional bench of Justices A. R. Dave, A. K. Sikri, R. K. Agrawal, A. K. Goel and R. Banumathi recalled a controversial judgement delivered on 18 July 2013 which had quashed NEET. According to the bench, the verdict delivered by the then Chief Justice Altamas Kabir neither considered an earlier SC judgement which was binding on the bench nor consulted other members of his bench.

Speculations are rife that this decision has been taken to remove medical college admission malpractices such as capitation fees and discretionary criteria. Private colleges indulge in malpractices for earning profits by circumventing a merit-based selection system for allotment of MBBS, BDS and PG seats.
