Dip fresh red litmus paper separately in three test tubes. The solution in which it turns red litmus to blue litmus contains basic solution. The blue litmus paper formed here can now be used to test the acidic solution. Now, put the blue litmus paper in the remaining two test tubes. The solution in which it turns blue litmus paper to red contains acidic solution. The solution which has no effect on any litmus paper contains distilled water.
