Dear student
tan x is indeed a discontinous function when taking the set of real numbers.
tan x is defined in the intervals (-/2, /2) or (/2, 3/2) and so on and this is continuous in these intervals.
So tan x is discontinuous in general and continuous incase of specific intervals mentioned
