- The Chipko movement started in Garhwal region of present Uttarakhand in 1870s.
- Women and men in this region came together to protest against the indiscriminate felling of trees by the contractors.
- They were opposed to the use of forests for commercial gains.
- Gradually, the protest turned into a movement.
- The government imposed a 15 year ban on felling green trees in the Himalayan forests.
