Sufis came to India with the Turkish rulers. Sufi saints preached tolerance, brotherhood and oneness of God. With respect to devoution to God, they believed in fundamental unity of all religions. Sufi saints believed and taught people that one can reach God through personal devoution and not by following meaningless rituals. In sufism, inner purity and self-discipline are esstential to gain the knowledge of God. The Sufis did not attach importance to namaz, hajj and celibacy. They regarded Singing and dancing as methods of bringing one nearer to realization of God. There were some leading Sufi saints like Khwaja Muinuddin Chisti, Fariuddin Ganj-i-Shakar, Nizam-ud-din Auliya etc.
