India has three levels of government:

  • Central government
  • State government
  • Local government

The interaction level between the government and people is maximum at the grass root level - the local government i.e. Panchayati raj in rural areas and municipal corporations in the urban areas. This is because it is the sphere of government that is closest to the people.

Benefits of the interactions are:

  • Many basic services that are closest to communities are delivered by municipalities and ward councillors.
  • The organisations that play an activist and/or developmental role understand how local government works and how to influence it in favour of the people.
  • It enables people to feel a sense of responsibility and also inculcates in them the value of democracy.
  • It also provides them an opportunity to participate in public affairs as well as help in the developmental work.
  • It reaches out to women, OBCs, SCs and STs and assimilates them into the mainstream political dynamics.
  • Eases the administrative burden on the State and Centre.

Kindly mention the correct subject along with the chapter name so that we would be able to provide you a more compact and precise answer.
