I] The clauses of the Subsidiary Alliance system were as follows:

  1. The troops of the English East India Company would be permanently deployed in the territories of the Indian rulers.
  2. The said rulers would bear the expenses of such a force. The payment could be made to the Company in cash or kind, or by ceding parts of territory.
  3. It would be compulsory for Indian rulers to have a British Resident at their court.
  4. The rulers would not be allowed to employ the services of any non-British Europeans and would have to relieve those who were already employed.
  5. Any alliance with other powers was forbidden without the consent of the Company.
  6. The Indian rulers would have to recognise the suzerainty of the British.

II] The Doctrine of Lapse was introduced by Lord Dalhousie. According to this doctrine, if any Indian ruler dies without leaving a male heir, his kingdom would automatically pass over to the British. Satara, Sambhalpur, Udaipur, Nagpur and Jhansi were some states which were annexed by the Company under this doctrine. The state of Awadh was annexed by the Company in 1856 on the charges of misgovernment by the Nawab of Awadh.

III] The Rowlatt Act of 1919 authorised the British government to arrest and imprison any person without trial and convict him in a court. The authorities could arrest an Indian without a warrant and could conduct his trial in seclusion. Also, the Act implied severe restrictions on movements of individuals and suspension of the basic rights.

All these acts were not in favour of Indians. Thus, these acts were unpopular with Indians.
