why we observe sunrise before its actual rise?

It happens because of atmospheric refraction. when the sun is below the horizon, light from it enters the atmosphere and bends towards the normal as it travels from rare to denser medium. Due to this it appears as if sunrise has taken place before the actual sunrise.
