Why was indefinite integration invented/ discovered?

Integration works alongside differentiation, for example, if we have to analyze an irregular shape and find its area it is difficult to do using traditional formulas, so we break it down to smaller simple pieces using differentiation and find its area and then add all smaller pieces up using integration. Using integration we have come up with many of the formulas in various fields of science.
