Why temperature decreases when altitude increases?

Expert Answer
Most of the heating of the troposphere is caused by heating from the ground and not from direct heating by the Sun's radiation. Thus, the effect of this heating reduces as altitude increases. Moreover, the dust particles are becomes negligible as one go higher up. This also reduces the temperature at higher elevation.
