why rutherford scattering experiment for discovery of nucleus happened in vaccum and why with alpha particles?

Reason for vacuum:
It had to be performed in a vacuum because the air would absorb the alpha particles before they hit the foil or before they got to the screen.
Reason for Alpha particles:
1. Alpha particles are small and yet have enough mass to be a suitable missile.
2. They are produced naturally by radioactive nuclides that are alpha emitters and so a steady supply was easy to obtain.
