Planets are actually believed to be just going around the sun along their set paths in circles. That simply means you have a sun and planet like Earth goes around it in a 2 dimensional circle. That is the reason why planets are believed to be in 2 dimensional motion. If they deviate from their respective paths, then they might run into each other which is an unfavorable situation.
