why numbering is given in reagents? what does it means?

Dear Student,
Numbering is given to the reagents used in the reaction shown above and below the reaction arrow because:
Numberng indicates the sequence in which these reagent are used in the reaction.
For example, in the given reaction of reduction of carboxylic acid to primary alcohol, reagent LiAlH4 is given number 1. and water or H2O is given number 2.
This is because, in the conversion of carboxylic acid to primary alcohol, the reduction of of carboxylic acid is initiated using the first reagent LiAlH4.
LiAlH4 converts carboxylic acid into an alkoxide first.
This is followed by the second regent that is water which provides proton that protonates alkoxide formed.
Thus, sequence in which these reagents are used up or participates in the reaction is shown with the help of numbering.
