Suppose a velocity vector makes an angle of a with the verticle axis.
Now draw a line perpendicular to the horizonal and vertical axis from the far end of the vector.
The lines which are made on the horizonal direction and vertical direction are the components and now we can find their components by using trigonomentry as V cos a in vertical and V sin a in horizontal.
