why is 'u' or distance of object negitive?

Expert Answer:

As per the new cartesian sign convention, the object is always placed to the left of the mirror/lens and all the distances measured to the left of the origin (along - x axis) are taken as negative. Hence, the numerical value of u is taken  as negative.
