The war of 1857 is also known as the First Indian War of Independence because though at first it began as a revolt of the sepoy's revolt of the Company's army, eventually it secured the participation of the masses. Its causes lay deeply embedded in the grievances that all sections of Indian society nurtured against the British rule.
