Sewage water contains harmful substances. It is a complex mixture containing suspended solids, organic and inorganic impurities, nutrients, saprotrophic and disease-causing bacteria, and other microbes. So, when sewage is discharged untreated into rivers or seas, it becomes dangerous for aquatic plants and animals. Therefore, it is necessary to treat sewage before disposing it off in a water body as it can cause harm to human and aquatic life.
