why is it important to maintain the potential difference across the ends of wire for flow of current?

Only when there is a potential difference between two points, a current can flow. 
The potential difference, V,between two points in a circuitis defined as theamount of work done, W, when one coulomb of charge passes from one point to the other point.
 
The SI unit for potentialdifference isVolt, V
