Expert Answer
- The main purpose of staining or adding dyes to the microbial smear is to make the microbes visible under microscope.
- Gram staining is performed to distinguish between gram positive and negative bacteria as they have different characteristics.
- Certain cellular components can also be viewed by staining.
- Cells may also be stained to highlight metabolic processes or to differentiate between live and dead cells in a sample.
