WHY IS CONSTANT OF PROPOTIONALITY NECESSARY ?

Given two variables x and y, y is (directly) proportional to x (

Then constant of proportionality is a constant k such that,

Note that without a constant k we can have potentially infinite relationships between y and x. So a constant k is a must to define a specific variation of x w.r.t. y.
