why is an ammeter likely to be burnt out if you connect it in parallel connection ?

This is because the internal resistance of an ammeter is very small, so the current comming out of voltage source will avoid the branch containing higher resistance and most of the current will flow through the ammeter. This large amount of current will produce the excessive heat thereby burning the ammeter.
