Expert Answer
Dear Student,
Glassware should not be heated directly by the flame of a Bunsen or other gas burner as they may break due to heat shock.
Wire gauze is usually used to keep glass beakers or flasks from breaking due to heat shock.
The iron wire gauge has asbestos at its centre, which spreads the heat from the burner, instead of concentrating the heat at a place.
Thus, wire gauze diffuses the heat and protects the glassware.
