Why is a hissing sound produced when quick lime reacts with water?

Expert Answer:

Quick lime (CaO) reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide.

Since the reaction is exothermic a lot of heat is produced which causes the water to boil.

CaO + H2O → Ca (OH)2
