why is a coil of copper wire mounted on soft iron used in dc motor and ac generator since there is no role of magnetic field around armature ,for the magnetic field, field magnets are used and not single copper wire is used?

instead of air if we place soft iron core inside the coil, the magnetic flux change through the coil will be stronger and the emf hence the current generated subsequently will be stronger in the coil.
This emf generated is proportional to the rate of change of flux through the coil.
