Lanthanides [Xe]4f1145d016s2
Actinides [Rn]5f1146d017s2
The order for filling the orbitals:
- 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s, 3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, and 7p
So, the 4f or 5f orbital will be filled first and then the d-orbital. Across the lanthanide series, electrons are added to the 4f shell. This first f shell is inside the full 5s and 5p shells.
