why in general electronic configuration of f block elements, the d subshellis given only 0-1 electrons instead of giving 10 electrons. In short explain general electronic configuration of f block elements.

Expert Answer:

General electronic configuration of f – block elements is (n–2)f1–14(n–1)d0–1ns2

Lanthanides                [Xe]4f1–145d0–16s2

Actinides                    [Rn]5f1–146d0–17s2

The order for filling the orbitals:

1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s, 3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, and 7p
So, the 4f or 5f orbital will be filled first and then the d-orbital. Across the lanthanide series, electrons are added to the 4f shell. This first f shell is inside the full 5s and 5p shells.
