  • The shoots respond to the stimulus of light and grow in the direction of light (upwards). This phenomenon is called phototropism.
  • The roots respond to the stimulus of gravity and grow in the direction of gravity (downwards). This phenomenon is called geotropism.
  • When light is coming from one direction of plant, the plant hormone auxin synthesised at the shoot diffuses towards shady side.
  • This concentration of auxin stimulates the cells to grow longer on the side of the shoot which is away from light.
  • Thus plant appears to bend towards light in upward direction.
  • Similarly, the roots in search of water and minerals grow downwards towards gravity.
