Why does refraction occur once in lens but twice in rectangular glass slab

As shown in figure in lens also refraction takes place twice.
 
As shown in figure below a converging lens or convex lens is approximated as two prisms placed on both side of glass slab
 
Deviation of direction of light ray is made by prisms, central part prodeuce no deviation only lateral shift.
But lens are normally thin, lateral shift made by by central slab is negligible
