Expert Answer:

Oil glands are stimulated when hormones become active during puberty, resulting in acne during the teenage years. Acne usually improves around the age of 20 but may not stop completely and persist in adulthood.

In adult women, pregnancy, disorders like polycystic syndrome or menopause may be some of the causes of acne. Acne may also be associated with increased stress levels or high-carbohydrate diet.

Although oily skin may cause more acne, dry skin can also have microscopic cracks in which bacteria can multiply and cause acne.
